My research focuses on the bursts of electrical signals that nerve cells exhibit while animals perform behavioural tasks. This is called ‘behavioural neurophysiology’ and relies on single-neuron extracellular recording. The goal of this research is to correlate the neural signals with behavioural events so that the functional role of the neurons being studied can be inferred. To date most of my research has focused on the mesolimbic dopamine system and its role in adaptive behaviour. However, I have also studied other psychological functions of dopamine (such as reward, motivation, response selection and response initiation) in a variety of species (rodents, carnivores, nonhuman primates and neurological patients). I have additional experience in the study of the neurophysiology and functional neuroanatomy of sensory systems, particularly in regard to selective attention.
